West Fields & Avalon Preserve, Stony Brook

About 1 hr.; 1 – 1.5 mi.; mostly flat; slow to moderate pace. Reservation required. Call Jane 631-689-1568. Walk the edges of two fields, see the small telescope building from the outside, learn why the fields attract birds (binoculars suggested), how the fields are maintained and why they are periodically cut. Then cross into the upper portion of Avalon Park to view the remains of the Stony Brook Pond and hear some of the things learned from the dam breaking. Bring a beverage. Rain cancels. Directions: Take rte. 25A in Saint James/Stony Brook to 67 Shep Jones Road. Park in the first lot on your left or along Shep Jones Road making sure to pull off as far as you can.
